Why Should You Coat Your Car?

Don’t you want your car to have the shine she had the first day you got her? The traditional stock paint will shine for some time and vanish. So, you need to coat your car. Coating adds a layer on the paint making it durable enough for everyday use and also keeps it shining.

Each coating works differently and you can choose the one that best suits your requirements.

Ceramic Coating

Ceramic coating is similar to Teflon with the only difference being in the curing process.

1. Teflon Coating

Teflon coating is made of PTFE which binds to your car’s paint and forms a layer over it. This additional coating protects your car from minor scratches and ensures that the shine lasts longer.

Teflon Coating

Advantages of Teflon Coating

  1. Prevents scratches: Scratches can occur when tiny dust particles settle on the car especially during dusting. So, Teflon coating on the paint will prevent these dust particles from scratching your car surface.

  2. Hydrophobic nature: Water accumulation can also cause stains on your car. Teflon coating makes the surface hydrophobic and prevents water from accumulating on your car.

  3. Scratch removal: Teflon coating helps remove scratches that haven’t penetrated the paint surface.

  4. Long lasting shine: A coating of Teflon on your car ensures its shine lasts longer as it protects the paint surface from the effects of natural elements.

Disadvantages of Teflon Coating

  1. Easily removable: The Teflon coating can go off easily if you wash your car with soap and detergent frequently.

  2. Not durable: Typically, Teflon coating has a life of six months to one year if maintained well.

  3. Expensive: It is cheaper than ceramic or PPF coating. However, the frequent coats of Teflon make it expensive in the long run.

2. Ceramic Coating

Ceramic coating is similar to that of Teflon coating with the only difference being in the area covered at a time and the curing process. Typically, ceramic coating covers a small area at a time and after completion, the car is kept in a controlled environment for the coat to cure. This makes the ceramic coating process a bit more tedious than Teflon coating.

ceramic coating

Advantages of Ceramic Coating

  1. Improves and retains the shine of your car paint: Ceramic coating makes your car paint shine more. It is durable and can last for 5-7 years depending on the kind of coat.

  2. Prevents scratches and swirl marks: Ceramic coats are often hard which protects your car’s surface against scratches and swirls. This helps keep the car surface smooth and shiny.

  3. UV resistant: Sun’s UV light can oxidise your car’s paint causing it to fade over time. A ceramic coating acts as a protective layer between the UV rays and the paint preventing it from oxidizing. This way, your car looks new for longer.

  4. Water repellant: Ceramic coating is also hydrophobic which prevents water from accumulating and staining your car’s surface.

Disadvantages of Ceramic Coating

  1. Not effective against all scratches: Ceramic coating does not protect against rick chips or other heavier scratches.

  2. Water stains: While the ceramic coating is hydrophobic in nature, you still have to make sure to wipe your car post washing. It may leave stains on the coat if the water is not wiped properly.

  3. Needs maintenance: There’s no denying that with ceramic coating you don’t have to wash your car frequently. However, to maintain the ceramic coating, you will have to wash it professionally.

  4. Needs to be applied and removed professionally: A ceramic coat is a sealant in a liquid form. It leaves a layer on drying and this layer needs to be applied properly else it could give an uneven finish. To remove the layer, sanding the car’s surface is needed which if overdone in one place could harm the paint and the look of the car.

FAQ's

Ceramic coating is durable, strong and offers better protection against dust, minor scratches and the weather making it really worth it.

Ceramic coating lasts for several years if taken care of properly, however, it has a high initial cost. On the other hand, Teflon coating has low initial cost but needs to be applied over and over which makes it more expensive in the long run.

A Teflon coating is PTFE 9 (Polyetrafluorethlene) based compound that forms a superficial coating on the paint surface. Ceramic coating on the other hand, is silica or quartz polymer that binds to the car’s paint at the molecular level to offer better protection and also longer lasting.

Typically, it takes about 3-4 hours to apply the Teflon coating on the car.

It takes about two days for ceramic coating to be applied in our car service center. The first day is usually needed to apply the ceramic coating while another 24 hours are needed for the coating to cure.
